Having experienced moving from one place to another I have my share of failed attempts to make the moving process easier. And with these unsuccessful tries, I have gathered lessons which I believe will be beneficial to share with everyone who will or at some point plan to move out from their current residence.
Update your mailing address ahead of time.
Given that you are already decided about your decision to move out and you also finalized your tenancy contract then make sure to update your mailing address. I’m sure you don’t want to miss out important documents that might be sent out to your old apartment right?
Take extra precaution for your valuable belongings.
If you don’t hire a professional team to move your things which normally insured valuable items, make sure that you have enough bubble wrap and blankets to secure them. Better to be extra careful than to be sorry.
Several small boxes are better than a few huge boxes.
You may think that putting everything in one huge box is better as you save more time by doing it. But base on my experience here is the downside we overlook when we pack our belongings using a few huge boxes. First, a huge box filled with different home items requires more manpower to carry them out. Second, you have to consider the width of your door when want to use huge boxes. And lastly, you can expect that unpacking will be less organized compared to unpacking from small boxes which you assigned for specific items.
Label all the boxes.
Sure you have sorted all your things and segregate them in separate boxes. Now don’t forget to label them as this will help you unpack things in an organized manner. And you can take the necessary precaution in handling boxes that are filled with breakable items.
Figure out which items need to be thrown, give away, sell and keep as you pack.
You might be surprised with the unnecessary items that you accumulate over the period of time when you start to sort out which items need to be thrown, give away, sell and keep as you pack. Throw out the things that are no longer fit for use, give away items that can be useful to others but you don’t need now, sell the items that are not practical to bring into your new home and keep the things that you still NEED.
Sell out huge items that are not practical to bring with you.
Sometimes it’s hard to let go of our furniture as we attached sentimental values on them. But have an honest assessment if it’s still practical to bring them with you in your new place because if not there are several options you can do to dispose those items, you can try selling them there are different online communities that buy and sell pre-loved items, or you can also donate them to goodwill organizations.
Use your suitcases for heavy items.
Instead of filling your suitcases with clothes why not use them to pack your books. It is easier to pull your rolling suitcases filled with books than trying to carry a box loaded with books. Your back will thank you if you do this.
Deconstruct modular furniture ahead of time.
To avoid the hassle of moving huge furniture try to check if it’s possible to deconstruct them. Most of the modern designed furniture is modular therefore you can deconstruct them and reassemble when needed.
Make sure that all the necessities are running in your new place before you move.
Packing and organizing the move can be messy and at times it can be exhausting. And one thing that you should not let to happen is to move into a place where necessary utilities aren’t running. Therefore, make sure that everything is up and ready at least a week before you move into your new apartment.
Schedule an end of tenancy cleaning if it is required.
Schedule your end of tenancy cleaning at least a day after you emptied your apartment. And make sure that you defrost your fridge even before you move out so the cleaners can clean them out completely. And to make sure that you won’t get into any trouble with your estate agent or landlord make sure that you only hire the best team to do the End of Tenancy Cleaning for you.

There are phases in life that we cannot avoid and move from one place to another is one of them. And this phase can be stressful but it doesn’t mean you have to bear all the possible hassle if there are ways you can avoid them. This list we share might not be complete but again these are based on my own experience and doing them will definitely save you from a lot of headaches.
