Earth day is celebrated every year at spring equinox. On this annual day, many events are held to promote awareness and appreciation of the Earth’s natural resources and environment. This event is celebrated across 175 countries. In 2009, United Nations decided April 22 to be the International Mother Earth day. Hence it has been decided to celebrate it on 22nd April at least till 2015.
This concept of Earth day was initiated by John McConnell in 1969, when he proposed first day of spring in the northern hemisphere, March 21, 1970 to be celebrated as Earth day. However, a month later separate Earth day was founded on April 22, 1970. The origin of Earth Day is since then credited to Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin. Gaylord who was an environmentalist, actively promoted the celebration.
Over these years the celebrations happen in various places across the world on the same day as the UN celebration. The Earth Society Foundation organizes the equinox Earth day at the UN.
Though the celebration and awareness campaigns started much earlier but till today, we have not had much progress. Our environment is still polluted with toxins; we are harming the ozone layer and polluting the water too. As the technology, modernization increases the perils to the environment increase. It has not been very long since the catastrophic BP oil spill happened, which devastated the animal life, marine life and in turn disrupted the entire ecosystem. Only a few came up to help but we have still not returned to our normal lives. For many the struggle with the disaster continues.
As the Earth day approaches we all need to go outside, plant a tree, avoid use of harmful products, clean our coastlines and contribute as much as we can towards the protection of the environment. We can change our current situation, by respecting the earth. Scientists have also been working for natural and environmental friendly alternatives. Apart from spreading awareness about conservation, promote financial, administrative and leisure activities on the internet to save energy and natural resources. Make an effort to contribute towards saving Mother Earth. Internet and online activities reduce the damage done to environment. This reduces cutting of trees and also reduces operational electricity consumed. Also do not forget to switch off your computer systems and monitors to save power. With all these efforts it is possible that cars will run on less harmful gas. Tapping solar energy and water energy will make us less dependent on the crude oil.
Don’t just sit back and wait for others to work towards the betterment of the environment. This exploitation of natural environment needs to stop for our better tomorrow. Gear up and put in your share of effort to save this world and make it a better place to live.
Let us all work together and celebrate this Earth day to create a healthy, clean and diverse world for our coming generations.
Come together for a greener tomorrow.
